Description
Garlic pulp is a natural agricultural agent derived from crushed bulbs of Allium sativum. In the context of plant protection products, it is classified as a biopesticide known for its potent repellent, insecticidal, and fungicidal properties. Its use is highly valued in organic farming systems as a sustainable alternative to chemical crop protection methods.
The primary active component is allicin, a sulfur-containing compound formed when garlic tissue is mechanically disrupted. Allicin is responsible for the characteristic pungent odor and provides the primary biological efficacy against pathogens and pests. This natural chemistry disrupts the life cycle of various organisms without causing the environmental damage associated with synthetic pesticides.
This substance is widely used to combat a variety of pests, including aphids, spider mites, thrips, and whiteflies, which frequently attack vegetable and berry crops. Additionally, garlic pulp exhibits significant fungicidal activity against common diseases like powdery mildew, gray mold, and late blight. It acts both as a contact agent and a preventive measure to improve overall plant health.
The mechanism of action involves creating an unfavorable environment for insects and pathogens. The volatile sulfur compounds act as strong repellents, effectively masking the host plant's scent and confusing pests. For fungal pathogens, the pulp interferes with cell wall integrity, inhibiting the germination and spread of spores across the foliage, which significantly reduces the pressure of infection.
