Grape cane tannins

Description

Grape cane tannins are naturally occurring polyphenolic compounds extracted from the stems and canes of Vitis vinifera. In agronomic practice, they are increasingly utilized as bio-active substances capable of modulating plant defense responses. These compounds serve as vital components in sustainable crop management systems, offering a green alternative to conventional synthetic chemical treatments.

These substances belong to the class of plant elicitors. Their primary function is to trigger the Systemic Acquired Resistance (SAR) pathway, which primes the crop to recognize and respond to environmental stressors and biotic attacks more efficiently. This physiological preparation is a key advantage of using tannins in high-intensity horticultural production.

The antimicrobial mechanism involves the tannin's ability to complex with microbial proteins, particularly those enzymes secreted by fungi to degrade plant cell walls. By inhibiting these enzymes, tannins effectively halt the spread of the pathogen, protecting the integrity of the plant tissue without directly introducing toxic synthetic compounds into the food chain.

Grape cane tannins are commonly employed against a variety of pathogens on high-value crops:

  • Botrytis cinerea (Grey mold) on grapes and berries.
  • Erysiphe necator (Powdery mildew) in vineyards.
  • Various soft rot pathogens in vegetable crops.

Application guidelines emphasize the importance of preventative spraying cycles to maximize the induction of the plant's defense system. These products are generally safe for the applicator and the environment, often requiring only standard personal protective equipment. Regular monitoring of crop development allows for optimized dosing, ensuring that the plant maintains its natural defenses throughout the growing season.
