The primary mechanism of action for hexachlorophene involves the disruption of microbial cellular membranes and the inhibition of oxidative phosphorylation. By interfering with the energy production cycle of fungi and bacteria, the substance effectively arrests the growth of pathogens and eliminates existing bacterial colonies on treated surfaces.

In agricultural practice, hexachlorophene was typically utilized for seed dressing and the treatment of planting materials. This application was aimed at shielding seedlings from soil-borne diseases during the critical germination phase, providing a sterile environment that reduces the incidence of fungal rots and seedling blight.

Applying this substance requires extreme caution. Due to its potential for phytotoxicity when applied at high concentrations, farmers must adhere to strictly defined dosage rates.
