Hexane

Hexane is a saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon which rarely acts as an active ingredient in crop protection products. Its primary role in the agrochemical industry is to serve as a highly effective organic solvent and carrier for technical grade active ingredients.

Classified chemically as an alkane, hexane is widely used in the formulation of emulsifiable concentrates and oil-based solutions. It ensures the stability of the pesticide formulation and facilitates consistent distribution when mixing the product with water in a spray tank.

The mechanism of action for hexane within a pesticide product involves enhancing the penetration of the active ingredient through the leaf cuticle or the insect cuticle. It effectively reduces the surface tension of the droplets, which leads to superior wetting and coverage of the target plant surface or pest.

Hexane is not specific to certain crops because it is an auxiliary component already embedded in the commercial formulations of various fungicides, insecticides, and herbicides. Agronomists select products based on the active ingredient, while hexane remains a part of the inert ingredients list provided by the manufacturer.

Safety is critical when handling formulations that include organic solvents. Hexane is flammable and can be toxic if inhaled; therefore, operators must wear appropriate personal protective equipment for respiration, skin, and eyes. Always prepare and apply these chemicals away from open flames and in well-ventilated areas.
