Description
Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a versatile chemical compound classified as an oxidizing agent and a broad-spectrum antiseptic. In agricultural applications, it serves as an effective fungicide, bactericide, and soil oxygenating agent. Because it decomposes into harmless water and oxygen, it is widely utilized in organic farming practices as a sustainable alternative to conventional synthetic chemical treatments.
The mechanism of action for hydrogen peroxide involves the release of reactive oxygen species (ROS) upon contact with organic matter or specific catalysts. These ROS cause rapid oxidative damage to the cellular components of fungi, bacteria, and spores, effectively destroying their cell walls and structural proteins. Unlike traditional pesticides, this mechanism is physical rather than chemical-specific, significantly reducing the probability of pathogen resistance.
Agricultural use includes the disinfection of seeds, which helps eliminate surface-borne pathogens and increases germination vigor by providing an immediate oxygen supply to the embryonic tissues. In hydroponic systems and greenhouses, hydrogen peroxide is frequently used to treat nutrient solutions and irrigation equipment. It effectively removes biofilms, prevents root rot, and ensures that plant roots have optimal access to dissolved oxygen for respiration.
In soil management, hydrogen peroxide is applied to improve oxygen availability in compacted or waterlogged soils. This helps maintain a healthy balance of aerobic microbial life while preventing the growth of anaerobic fungi responsible for damping-off and root diseases. Precise application is crucial; high concentrations can potentially impact delicate beneficial soil organisms, so it must be carefully diluted according to the specific needs of the crop.

Furthermore, it should never be mixed with incompatible substances, as rapid decomposition can cause violent reactions.
