In forestry and agricultural pest management, it is classified as a semiochemical rather than a traditional pesticide, serving as an attractant to influence insect behavior.

The mechanism of action for lineatin mimics the chemical signals released by male beetles to lure females to host trees or breeding galleries. By deploying synthetic formulations of this compound in specialized traps, foresters can effectively monitor population levels or perform mass trapping, which significantly reduces the pressure of pests on forest stands.

This substance is primarily utilized in coniferous forestry to combat timber-boring beetles that cause significant damage to commercial timber. It plays a critical role in Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies, as it allows for targeted control of specific species without the indiscriminate ecological harm associated with broad-spectrum insecticides.
