Iron pyrophosphate
Description
Iron pyrophosphate is an inorganic compound widely recognized in modern agriculture as a highly effective molluscicide. Unlike traditional chemical slug baits that pose risks to domestic animals and wildlife, this substance is characterized by low toxicity to mammals, birds, earthworms, and beneficial insects, making it a preferred choice for environmentally friendly and organic crop protection programs.
The mechanism of action involves a specific impact on the digestive tract of slugs and snails. Upon ingestion of the granular bait containing iron pyrophosphate, the mollusk's digestive system ceases to function, leading to rapid paralysis. Consequently, the pests stop feeding immediately, which protects the crops from further damage before they eventually die in their hiding places, leaving no unsightly slime trails.
The substance is registered for use on a wide variety of crops, including vegetables, fruits, berries, ornamentals, and nursery stock. It is particularly effective in controlling various species of slugs and snails that frequently decimate young seedlings, leafy vegetables like lettuce and cabbage, strawberries, and tender ornamental flowers during periods of high humidity.
Application procedures require scattering the granules evenly across the soil surface around the plants to be protected. For optimal results, application should be performed in the evening or following irrigation or rainfall, as this is when slugs and snails are most active. It is important to avoid piling the granules and ensure they do not contaminate the edible parts of the plants.
While iron pyrophosphate is considered safe for the environment, standard safety precautions must still be followed. Operators should wear gloves during application and avoid direct contact with skin or eyes. The product must be stored in its original, tightly sealed container, kept out of reach of children and pets, and stored away from food, drink, and animal feed to prevent accidental ingestion.
