Jasmonic acid
Description
Jasmonic acid is a natural organic compound belonging to the class of lipid-derived plant hormones known as jasmonates. In modern agronomy, it is not classified as a traditional pesticide but rather as a biostimulator and elicitor that triggers the plant's own defense mechanisms.
The mechanism of action relies on the activation of signaling pathways associated with responses to tissue damage and insect herbivory. When applied, jasmonic acid mimics a pest attack, which induces the expression of specific genes responsible for producing secondary metabolites and defensive proteins, such as protease inhibitors.
This substance is used on a wide range of crops, including cereals, vegetables, and fruit trees. It is particularly effective in increasing resistance against chewing insects and certain necrotrophic pathogens that cause rot and leaf spotting diseases in intensive farming conditions.
Proper application requires strict adherence to dosage guidelines. Excessive use of jasmonates may lead to a reduction in plant growth rates, as the plant shifts its metabolic resources from vegetative development toward defensive mechanisms. It is best applied preventively before anticipated stress or during high pest pressure periods.
