Clethodim is a highly effective active ingredient belonging to the cyclohexanedione chemical class. It is a selective, systemic herbicide widely used in modern agriculture to control annual and perennial grass weeds in broad-leaved crops.
The mechanism of action of clethodim involves the inhibition of the enzyme acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACCase) in the meristematic tissues of target weeds. By blocking this enzyme, the herbicide prevents fatty acid biosynthesis, which leads to the collapse of cell membranes, stoppage of plant growth, and eventual death of the weed species.
This substance is commonly applied to various crops, including soybeans, canola, sugar beets, sunflowers, and potatoes. Its high selectivity allows for the effective elimination of grasses such as foxtail, barnyardgrass, and quackgrass without causing any phytotoxic damage to the tolerant dicotyledonous crops.
Successful application of clethodim requires targeting actively growing weeds in their early stages, typically between 2 to 6 true leaves. The systemic nature of the product ensures that the herbicide is absorbed by the foliage and translocated throughout the entire plant, including the roots and rhizomes, ensuring complete control.
