Lactofen
Description
Lactofen is a highly effective active ingredient belonging to the diphenyl ether chemical class. This compound is a potent selective herbicide widely used in modern agriculture to control broadleaf weeds in various field crops.
The mechanism of action of lactofen involves the inhibition of the protoporphyrinogen oxidase (PPO) enzyme within plant cells. This disruption leads to the failure of chlorophyll synthesis and the accumulation of photosynthetic intermediates, which causes the destruction of cell membranes under sunlight exposure. As a result, susceptible weeds rapidly lose turgor and die.
Soybeans are the primary crop where lactofen is utilized. The product demonstrates excellent results in controlling challenging weed species such as common ragweed, pigweed, velvetleaf, and various smartweed species. Due to its contact nature, it effectively controls weeds even at advanced growth stages.
Application requires strict adherence to specific conditions: treatments should be performed on actively growing weeds under favorable weather conditions. It is crucial to prevent spray drift to neighboring crops, as lactofen is highly phytotoxic to most dicotyledonous plants. On soybeans, minor temporary leaf scorching may occur, which generally does not affect total yield.
