Description
Laminarin is a natural polysaccharide derived from brown algae (Laminaria digitata). In modern plant protection, it is classified as a biofungicide and a powerful elicitor. Unlike conventional systemic fungicides that kill pathogens directly, laminarin acts as a signal molecule that triggers the plant's own defense mechanisms, making it an essential tool for sustainable and organic farming practices.
The mechanism of action involves the stimulation of induced systemic resistance (ISR) and systemic acquired resistance (SAR). When applied to the plant, laminarin is recognized by specific receptors, which initiates a cascade of immune responses. This includes the production of phytoalexins, the strengthening of cell walls through lignification, and the synthesis of pathogenesis-related (PR) proteins that effectively inhibit fungal growth.
Laminarin is applied to a variety of crops, including grapes, tomatoes, strawberries, and cereals. It is particularly effective in preventing diseases such as powdery mildew, botrytis (gray mold), and various leaf spot pathogens. Due to its mode of action, it provides a comprehensive protective barrier, significantly reducing the dependency on synthetic fungicides throughout the growing season.
Regarding application, timing is the most critical factor. As a preventive inducer, it should be applied before the onset of disease symptoms or during periods favorable for pathogen development. It is highly compatible with other bio-stimulants and fertilizers, but it is important to maintain the correct pH level of the tank mix. Frequent, low-dose applications are often more effective than infrequent, high-dose treatments.
Safety precautions are minimal as laminarin is non-toxic to humans, mammals, pollinators, and beneficial insects. It poses no risk to the environment, making it a safe choice for integrated pest management (IPM) programs. However, standard laboratory and field safety practices, such as wearing protective gloves and eye protection, should always be followed to ensure personal safety during the mixing and spraying process.
