Lanolin
Description
Lanolin, often referred to as wool wax or wool grease, is a complex natural substance derived from sheep's wool. In the agricultural sector, it serves primarily as a specialized adjuvant designed to enhance the physical performance of various plant protection products, including insecticides, fungicides, and herbicides.
From a chemical perspective, lanolin is a mixture of long-chain esters, fatty acids, and alcohols. Its unique properties allow it to act as a highly efficient sticking agent. By reducing surface tension and altering the rheological properties of the spray solution, it ensures better coverage and retention of the active ingredients on the foliage.
The primary mechanism of action involves the formation of a hydrophobic, weather-resistant film on the plant surface. This film acts as a protective barrier that prevents the active ingredient from being washed away by rainfall or degraded by UV radiation, thereby extending the residual activity of the applied crop protection treatment.
Lanolin is typically used on diverse agricultural crops, including fruit trees, vineyards, and field vegetables. It is particularly valuable for crops with waxy cuticles where traditional water-based sprays struggle to maintain contact. Its usage helps farmers optimize the biological efficacy of their treatments while potentially reducing the frequency of re-application.
Regarding application, producers must ensure that the lanolin-based formulation is compatible with the tank mix partners to avoid precipitation or uneven distribution. While lanolin is considered environmentally safe and biodegradable, operators should adhere to standard safety protocols, such as using protective gear during preparation to prevent unnecessary skin or eye contact with concentrated chemicals.
