Lecithins

Lecithins are recognized as essential basic substances in agriculture, derived primarily from plant sources such as soybeans. They are widely utilized in sustainable and organic crop protection programs because they provide a safe, natural, and biodegradable solution for managing various plant pathogens without leaving harmful residues in the environment.

Functionally, lecithins act as both contact fungicides and surfactants (adjuvants). Their primary role is to serve as a protective barrier on the plant surface while simultaneously improving the wetting and sticking properties of the spray solution, ensuring that active ingredients reach their target more effectively.

The mechanism of action for lecithins is primarily physical. When applied to the leaves, they form a lipid-based film that prevents fungal spores from attaching to the plant epidermis and inhibits the germination of mycelium. Furthermore, their emulsifying action disrupts the cell membranes of pathogens, creating an environment that is hostile to the development of fungal infections.

Lecithins are particularly effective against powdery mildew across a variety of agricultural and horticultural crops. They are commonly applied to grapes, fruit trees, and various vegetable crops. To maximize efficacy, growers should prioritize prophylactic treatments, applying the product before the onset of heavy infection cycles and repeating applications during periods of favorable weather for fungal growth.

Regarding application and safety, lecithins are considered non-toxic to humans, bees, and other beneficial organisms. However, standard professional agricultural practices should be followed, including the use of basic protective gear (gloves and goggles) during mixing. Because they are contact-based, complete coverage of the plant foliage is critical for the success of the treatment.
