Lime sulphur

Lime sulphur, chemically known as calcium polysulphide, is a classic inorganic pesticide widely used in horticulture. It functions as a contact fungicide, insecticide, and acaricide. Due to its broad-spectrum efficacy, it remains a staple tool for integrated pest management, especially for organic and traditional orchard maintenance during the dormant season.

The mode of action relies on the decomposition of calcium polysulphide upon exposure to air, which releases elemental sulfur and calcium compounds. Sulfur acts as an inhibitor of fungal spore germination and mycelial growth, while the strong alkaline properties of the solution degrade the protective outer shells (chitin) of insects and their eggs, effectively eradicating overwintering pest populations.

Lime sulphur is primarily applied to pome fruits, stone fruits, and grapevines. It is highly effective against major diseases such as apple scab, powdery mildew, peach leaf curl, and various rusts. Additionally, it targets dormant-stage pests, including San Jose scale, various mites, and aphids. It is most commonly applied as a dormant or delayed-dormant spray to ensure maximum efficacy without damaging emerging foliage.

Application requires careful attention to dilution rates and environmental conditions. Because it is highly alkaline, it can be phytotoxic to green, succulent tissues if applied during the growing season. Growers must ensure thorough coverage of tree bark, as the chemical does not have systemic action and only affects pests and pathogens with which it comes into direct contact.

Safety precautions are essential when handling this substance. Lime sulphur has a strong, unpleasant odor similar to rotten eggs and is a skin and eye irritant. Operators must wear appropriate personal protective equipment, including chemical-resistant gloves and goggles. Furthermore, it should never be mixed with acidic pesticides or oils, as chemical reactions can reduce its efficacy or produce hazardous fumes.
