Description
Mamestra brassicae nuclear polyhedrosis virus is a specialized biological insecticide used for the control of the cabbage moth (Mamestra brassicae). This agent belongs to the baculovirus group, which acts as a highly selective pathogen targeting specific lepidopteran larvae while remaining safe for non-target species such as pollinators and beneficial predators.
The mechanism of action involves the ingestion of viral polyhedra by larvae while feeding on treated foliage. Once inside the alkaline environment of the insect's midgut, the polyhedra dissolve, releasing infectious virions. These virions penetrate the gut cells, initiating a systemic infection that eventually leads to the complete breakdown of the larva's internal tissues and death.
This biological control agent is specifically applied to various crops, primarily brassicas such as cabbage, broccoli, and cauliflower.
