Mercuric oxide is an inorganic mercury compound that was historically utilized in agriculture primarily as a potent fungicide and seed dressing agent. Known for its distinct reddish or yellow crystalline structure, this substance was employed to control various fungal pathogens affecting crops globally.

The mechanism of action of mercuric oxide involves the release of mercury ions, which react with the thiol (sulfhydryl) groups of essential enzymes in fungal cells. This reaction disrupts the metabolic pathways of pathogens, effectively inhibiting their development, spore germination, and overall viability.

Historically, it was used to treat seeds for small grains to prevent seed-borne diseases and as an ingredient in wound paints for fruit trees to protect bark from pathogens. Its ability to provide long-lasting protection made it a standard treatment before safer, more environmentally friendly alternatives became available.

Modern agricultural regulations globally have banned the use of mercuric oxide due to its significant toxicity. The substance is highly persistent in the environment and poses severe risks to human health, including neurological damage, and can bioaccumulate significantly within food chains.

Safety protocols for handling such substances are extremely stringent. Protective gear, including chemical-resistant respirators, gloves, and full body protection, is mandatory for any management of legacy stocks.
