Neodiprion sertifer nuclear polyhedrosis virus
Description
Neodiprion sertifer nuclear polyhedrosis virus (NsNPV) is a highly specific biological insecticide belonging to the group of baculoviruses. It acts as a selective viral pathogen used specifically to control larvae of the European pine sawfly (Neodiprion sertifer). As a biological control agent, it offers a sustainable alternative to chemical pesticides, posing no threat to beneficial insects, wildlife, or human health.
The mechanism of action is ingestion-based. Once larvae consume needles contaminated with viral polyhedra, the alkaline environment of the larval midgut dissolves the polyhedra, releasing infectious virions. These virions invade the epithelial cells, spreading rapidly through the insect's hemolymph and tissues. The infection eventually leads to the cessation of feeding and the death of the host, typically within one to two weeks depending on the temperature and dosage.
This biological agent is primarily used in forestry, specifically for protecting pine plantations, nurseries, and coniferous forests from defoliation caused by N. sertifer. Its efficacy is particularly high during outbreaks, where it can be applied as a preventive or curative measure to prevent the collapse of young forest stands due to severe feeding damage.
Effective application relies on timing. The treatment should be conducted while the majority of the sawfly population is in the early larval stages (L1–L2). Applying the virus during these stages ensures maximum ingestion of the pathogen before the larvae can cause significant economic damage to the trees. Consistent coverage of the canopy is essential for achieving a successful viral epizootic within the pest population.
Regarding safety precautions, while NsNPV is non-toxic to mammals and non-target species, handlers should follow general safety practices for agricultural chemicals, including the use of protective clothing and masks to avoid inhalation or skin irritation from the formulation carriers. Products should be stored under refrigerated conditions to maintain the stability and infectivity of the viral particles over long periods.
