Other inorganic mercury compounds represent a class of substances that were once widely utilized in agriculture as potent fungicides and seed disinfectants. These inorganic agents, including mercuric chloride and other metallic mercury salts, were the standard choice for controlling various seed-borne diseases in the early 20th century.
The mechanism of action of these compounds relies on the high affinity of mercury ions for the thiol groups of essential fungal enzymes. By binding to these proteins, mercury irreversibly disrupts the metabolism and respiratory pathways of the fungus, leading to effective eradication of the pathogen but also creating significant toxicity concerns.
Historically, these chemicals were applied as dusts or liquid dips for seeds, particularly for cereals to combat smuts and blights. They provided excellent control over soil-borne pathogens due to their persistent nature in the environment, which was considered an advantage in older agronomic practices.
Modern global agricultural policy has strictly prohibited the use of inorganic mercury compounds due to their extreme environmental persistence and severe risk to human health. Mercury is a heavy metal that does not degrade, leading to long-term contamination of soil profiles and potential accumulation in the food supply chain.
Today, the focus in professional plant protection is shifted toward sustainable and biologically safe alternatives. Strict disposal protocols are in place for any historical stockpiles, and farmers are advised to prioritize modern, approved systemic fungicides that satisfy current ecological safety standards and regulations.
