Description
Oxadixyl is a systemic fungicide belonging to the phenylamide chemical class. It is widely recognized in agricultural practice for its ability to provide curative and preventative protection against various plant pathogens, particularly those belonging to the Oomycetes group.
The mode of action of oxadixyl involves inhibiting the synthesis of ribosomal RNA within the fungus. By blocking the activity of RNA polymerase, the substance effectively disrupts the fungal metabolism, causing the cessation of mycelial growth and preventing the spread of spores throughout the plant tissue.
It is primarily used to control diseases such as late blight, downy mildew, and various forms of damping-off. Due to its systemic properties, oxadixyl is absorbed by the roots and leaves, providing comprehensive protection to the plant, including newly emerging shoots that were not directly exposed to the spray.
Oxadixyl is commonly utilized on a wide range of crops including potatoes, tomatoes, onions, cucumbers, and grapes. It is frequently formulated in mixtures with contact fungicides like mancozeb, which helps manage resistance development in fungal populations and broadens the range of controlled diseases.
When applying products containing oxadixyl, operators must adhere to strict safety regulations, including the use of protective equipment for eyes, skin, and inhalation. Additionally, farmers must observe the mandatory pre-harvest intervals to ensure that no harmful residues remain on the harvested crops.
