Ozone (O3) is a powerful oxidizing agent widely utilized in modern agriculture as a disinfectant, sanitizer, and fumigant. As an unstable gas that readily decomposes into oxygen, it serves as a highly sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional synthetic chemical pesticides, leaving no hazardous residues on food commodities or in the soil environment.

The mechanism of action of ozone involves the direct oxidation of cell membranes, proteins, and DNA within pathogens. This rapid oxidative stress causes irreversible damage to the structural integrity of bacteria, mold spores, and viruses, leading to cell lysis. In agricultural practice, ozone is primarily applied for the decontamination of storage silos, grain elevators, and produce warehouses. Additionally, ozone treatment is employed in irrigation water systems to minimize pathogen load and in seed priming to enhance germination vigor.

Application protocols must account for specific environmental factors such as ambient temperature and relative humidity, as these variables significantly influence the stability and penetration depth of the ozone gas. Proper facility sealing is essential to maintain the necessary concentration for targeted sanitization.
