Paraffin oil (CAS 64741-88-4) is a highly refined mineral oil formulation used extensively in modern agriculture as a contact insecticide and acaricide. Due to its mode of action, it is primarily used for the management of overwintering pests on fruit trees, vines, and various ornamental plants, providing a sustainable way to reduce pest pressure early in the season.

The mechanism of action is purely physical rather than chemical. When applied, the oil forms a thin, uniform film over the insects, mite eggs, and larvae. This film effectively seals off the spiracles (breathing pores), leading to suffocation. Because it acts physically, there is little to no risk of pests developing resistance, making it an excellent component of integrated pest management (IPM) programs.

Paraffin oil is commonly used on pome fruits, stone fruits, and citrus. The primary application window is during the dormant or semi-dormant stage of the trees, typically before the buds break. This timing allows for the maximum coverage of bark crevices where pests such as scale insects, mites, and aphids are known to hibernate, ensuring a clean start for the upcoming growing season.

Proper application technique is critical for success. The oil must cover all plant surfaces thoroughly to ensure contact with all target pests. However, users should be cautious about environmental conditions; application should be avoided during freezing temperatures or periods of extreme heat, as the oil film can interfere with plant transpiration and potentially cause phytotoxicity if applied under stressed conditions.

When handling this substance, operators must follow strict safety protocols. Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including gloves and respiratory protection, to avoid skin and eye contact. It is also advised to maintain a strict interval between applying paraffin oil and other chemicals, particularly sulfur-based products, to avoid potential plant damage and ensure the efficacy of the pesticide program.
