Paraffin oil is a highly refined mineral oil widely utilized in crop protection as a contact-based insecticide and acaricide. Chemically categorized as a mixture of saturated hydrocarbons, it acts as a physical rather than a systemic agent. Due to its mode of action, it is a popular choice for integrated pest management (IPM) programs aimed at reducing reliance on synthetic neurotoxic pesticides.

The mode of action of paraffin oil is physical: it forms a fine film over the pest's body, which physically clogs the spiracles (breathing pores). This blockage prevents gas exchange, leading to the death of the insect or mite through suffocation. Additionally, the oil disrupts the integrity of the eggs' surfaces, often preventing them from hatching and effectively controlling pest populations at various developmental stages.

In agriculture, paraffin oil is primarily applied to fruit orchards, vineyards, and greenhouses. It is exceptionally effective against overwintering pests such as scale insects, mealybugs, spider mites, aphids, and psyllids. By applying it during dormant or semi-dormant stages, growers can significantly reduce the pressure of these pests before the main growing season begins.

Application requires careful attention to environmental conditions. It should not be applied under extreme heat (above 30°C) or during frosty conditions, as the oil can interfere with plant transpiration and potentially cause phytotoxicity. Proper coverage is essential for success, so high-volume spraying is recommended to ensure the oil reaches every crack and crevice where pests may hide.
