The primary mechanism of action for paraffin oil is purely physical rather than chemical. When sprayed, it forms a thin, persistent film over the target organisms, covering their spiracles or breathing pores. This process induces asphyxiation, leading to the rapid death of soft-bodied insects and mites. Additionally, it provides ovicidal properties by disrupting the gas exchange in pest eggs, preventing successful hatching.

This substance is commonly used to target a wide range of overwintering pests on pome fruits, stone fruits, and grapes. It is particularly effective against scale insects, mealybugs, aphids, spider mites, and leafhoppers. It is often applied during the dormant season or early spring to suppress the initial populations of these pests before they migrate to new foliage.
