Paraffin oil

Description

Paraffin oil, known in agriculture as horticultural mineral oil, is a highly refined petroleum-based substance used as a contact insecticide and miticide. Due to its specific chemical structure, it provides a physical barrier against various pests, making it a cornerstone in integrated pest management (IPM) strategies for both conventional and organic-leaning farming systems.

The mode of action of paraffin oil is entirely physical rather than biochemical. Once applied, the oil spreads across the plant surface and covers the bodies of insects, mites, and their eggs. This coating acts as a suffocating agent by sealing the spiracles (breathing pores) of the pests, ultimately leading to their death. Additionally, it hinders the ability of pests to attach to the plant surface and interferes with the egg-hatching process.

It is primarily utilized to control a wide range of soft-bodied insects and mites, including scale insects, aphids, whiteflies, mealybugs, and spider mites. Its application is most common in fruit orchards (apples, citrus, pears) and viticulture. It is highly valued as a dormant spray, as it is effective against overwintering pest populations before they become active in the growing season.

When applying paraffin oil, technical precision is required to achieve success. The spray must provide thorough coverage of all stems, branches, and crevices where pests hide. It is essential to monitor weather conditions; applications should be avoided during freezing temperatures or extreme heat, as plants under such stress may suffer from phytotoxicity if the oil film prevents proper transpiration.

Farmers must strictly observe safety precautions regarding compatibility. Paraffin oil should not be applied shortly before or after treatments involving sulfur-based fungicides, as this combination can cause severe leaf burn. Given that its action is purely mechanical, there is virtually no risk of insects developing resistance, which makes it an indispensable tool for long-term sustainable pest control programs.
