Petroleum oils (CAS 74869-22-0), commonly referred to as mineral oils or horticultural oils, serve as essential contact insecticides and acaricides in modern agricultural practice. These substances consist of refined oil fractions designed to control various pests while maintaining a favorable profile for environmental safety compared to many synthetic alternatives.

The primary mechanism of action is physical rather than chemical. When applied, the oil creates a film over the pest's surface, effectively blocking the spiracles or breathing pores, which results in suffocation. Furthermore, these oils disrupt the development of pest eggs by hindering the exchange of gases, effectively providing ovicidal activity that prevents population explosions.

Petroleum oils are predominantly used in orchards and vineyards to manage overwintering populations of scale insects, aphids, mites, and mealybugs. They are often applied during the dormant season as a "dormant oil" to clean up trees before the growing season starts, although specialized refined oils are also safe for use during the active vegetation stage when used at lower concentrations.

Application techniques require thorough coverage, as the product must physically contact the target organism to be effective. Farmers should be aware of environmental constraints; applying oil during extreme heat (above 30°C) or during freezing conditions can lead to plant injury. It is critical to monitor local weather conditions to ensure that the oil dries properly without causing phytotoxicity.
