Bacteriophage phi EaH2

Bacteriophage phi EaH2 is a specialized biological control agent categorized as a bio-bactericide. It is primarily used to target and eliminate Erwinia amylovora, the bacterial pathogen responsible for fire blight, a devastating disease affecting pome fruit trees and other members of the Rosaceae family.

The mechanism of action relies on the natural host-pathogen specificity of bacteriophages. Upon contact with Erwinia amylovora, the phage attaches to specific receptor sites on the bacterial surface and injects its genetic material. The phage then hijacks the bacterial metabolic machinery to replicate itself, leading to the lysis of the host cell and the release of progeny phages that continue the infection cycle against remaining pathogens.

This biological agent is applied in orchards to manage fire blight infections on apple, pear, and quince trees. It is most effective during the blooming stage, where it acts as a preventative measure to reduce the bacterial population on blossoms, preventing the systemic spread of the disease into the woody tissues of the tree.

Key operational considerations include the environmental sensitivity of the agent. Since it is a biological organism, its efficacy can be impacted by high UV exposure and extreme temperatures. Applications are most effective during early morning or late evening hours to ensure the phage remains active on the plant surfaces for an adequate duration.
