Description

Picolinafen is a potent active ingredient belonging to the pyridinecarboxamide chemical class, widely recognized for its efficacy as a selective herbicide. It is primarily utilized in modern agriculture for the control of a broad spectrum of broad-leaved weeds in various cereal crops, including winter and spring wheat, barley, and rye.

The mechanism of action for picolinafen is based on the inhibition of the phytoene desaturase enzyme. By blocking this essential enzyme, the compound disrupts the biosynthesis of carotenoids. Without these pigments, the chlorophyll within the weed tissues is destroyed by sunlight, a process known as photo-oxidation, leading to rapid bleaching and the eventual death of the unwanted vegetation.

It is specifically applied to control difficult-to-manage annual broad-leaved weeds, such as cleavers (Galium aparine), cornflower, common poppy, and various cruciferous weeds. Its systemic property allows for both foliar absorption and soil residual activity, which helps in preventing the emergence of subsequent flushes of weeds following the initial application.
