Active ingredient

Pinoxaden

Description

Pinoxaden is a highly selective active ingredient belonging to the phenylpyrazoline chemical class. It serves as a systemic post-emergence herbicide, specifically engineered to control annual grass weeds in cereal crop production without compromising the health of the main crop.

The primary mechanism of action involves the inhibition of the acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACCase) enzyme. By targeting this enzyme, Pinoxaden disrupts the biosynthesis of lipids within the plant. This inhibition leads to the cessation of growth in meristematic tissues, followed by the eventual chlorosis and necrosis of the target grass weeds.

Pinoxaden is widely registered for use on wheat, barley, rye, and triticale. It is exceptionally effective against key grass weed species, including wild oats (Avena fatua), green foxtail, barnyard grass, and blackgrass. Its selective nature ensures that cereal crops can effectively metabolize the active ingredient, making it a safe choice for modern farming systems.

Successful application of Pinoxaden depends on optimal weather conditions and growth stages of the target weeds. The herbicide is rapidly absorbed through the leaves, ensuring that its efficacy is maintained even if light rain occurs shortly after application. Often, it is formulated with an appropriate safener to enhance the tolerance of the crop to the chemical.

  • Apply during early tillering stages for best control.
  • Avoid spraying during extreme temperature stress.
  • Ensure uniform spray coverage across the field.
  • Adhere to specified dosage rates to prevent resistance development.

Safety precautions are mandatory when handling Pinoxaden-based products. Users should always wear personal protective equipment, including gloves and goggles, to minimize exposure. Careful attention should be paid to buffer zones and wind speed to prevent spray drift, ensuring the product is used in an environmentally responsible manner.
