Pyriproxyfen

Pyriproxyfen is a broad-spectrum insecticide and a key representative of the juvenile hormone mimic (JHM) class, also known as insect growth regulators (IGRs). This compound is widely utilized in professional agriculture to disrupt the physiological development of harmful insects, preventing them from maturing and reproducing successfully.

The mode of action of pyriproxyfen mimics the natural juvenile hormone of insects. By binding to receptors in the insect body, it interferes with the metamorphosis process. Specifically, it prevents larvae from molting into pupae or adults. Furthermore, it causes cross-ovarian sterilization in adult females, meaning that any eggs laid are unable to hatch, which effectively crashes the pest population over time.

Pyriproxyfen is primarily employed to combat homopteran pests, including whiteflies (such as Bemisia tabaci), scale insects, mealybugs, and certain species of midges. It is a vital tool for vegetable production in greenhouses, as well as for fruit tree orchards and ornamental plant nurseries. Its ability to disrupt the lifecycle makes it an excellent choice for populations that have developed resistance to organophosphates or pyrethroids.
