Description
Pyroxsulam is a systemic, selective herbicide belonging to the triazolopyrimidine sulfonamide chemical class. It is extensively utilized in cereal production to manage a broad range of grass weeds and select broadleaf weeds, offering high efficacy through its systemic properties within the plant tissues.
The primary mode of action of pyroxsulam is the inhibition of the acetolactate synthase (ALS) enzyme. By targeting this specific enzyme, the herbicide effectively shuts down the production of branched-chain amino acids, which are essential for the growth and survival of susceptible weed species, leading to their rapid physiological collapse.
This active ingredient is labeled for use on crops such as wheat, rye, and triticale. It is particularly valued in professional agronomy for its ability to suppress problematic weeds like loose silky-bent (Apera spica-venti) and various brome species that often outcompete cereal crops for nitrogen and moisture.
For optimal results, applications should be timed during the early stages of weed development, typically from the two-leaf to the tillering stage. It is recommended to apply pyroxsulam in combination with compatible surfactants or adjuvants, which significantly improve the product's adhesion and absorption into the weed foliage.
Safety and handling are paramount when utilizing this herbicide. Users must strictly adhere to the manufacturer's recommendations regarding dosage rates to avoid potential phytotoxicity to the crop. Additionally, standard safety protocols, including wearing protective clothing and eyewear, are necessary to prevent dermal and ocular exposure during the mixing and spraying process.
