Active ingredient

Clove oil

Description

Clove oil is a natural active ingredient derived from the Syzygium aromaticum tree. In agricultural practice, it is classified as a botanical or organic pesticide. The primary component responsible for its efficacy is eugenol, a phenolic compound known for its strong herbicidal and antimicrobial properties.

The substance serves primarily as a non-selective contact herbicide. Unlike systemic chemical herbicides, clove oil does not travel within the plant's vascular system. Instead, it works by disrupting the cell membrane integrity of green tissues, leading to rapid desiccation and necrosis of the exposed plant parts.

The mechanism of action involves the rapid destruction of the cuticle layer and dehydration of plant cells. Upon contact, the oil causes immediate chlorophyll breakdown. Because of this mode of action, it is highly effective against young, annual weeds, mosses, and liverworts, making it a preferred choice for integrated pest management and organic farming systems.

In addition to weed control, clove oil exhibits significant fungicidal and insecticidal activity. It is used to manage powdery mildew and various soft-bodied pests such as aphids and spider mites. Its rapid degradation in the environment makes it a safe tool for managing weeds in vineyards, orchards, and vegetable plots without the risk of long-term soil contamination.

  • Apply strictly as a directed or spot spray to avoid injuring the crop foliage.
  • Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) as concentrated oil can be irritating to skin and eyes.
  • Best results are achieved when applied during warm, sunny conditions which enhance the desiccation process.
  • Store in a cool, dark place to maintain the chemical stability of the active volatile compounds.
  • Repeat applications may be necessary for weeds with established root systems due to the lack of systemic activity.
