Garlic oil

Description

Garlic oil is a botanical pesticide derived from Allium sativum, widely utilized in sustainable agriculture as an effective insecticide, acaricide, and deterrent. Its biological activity is primarily attributed to sulfur-containing compounds, with diallyl disulfide being the most significant component for pest management.

The mechanism of action involves a potent repellent effect and contact toxicity against various arthropod pests. The oil interferes with the olfactory sensors of insects and mites, preventing them from identifying host plants, and acts as an antifeedant, causing pests to cease feeding and vacate the treated area.

Garlic oil is applied to a diverse range of crops, including vegetables, fruit trees, and ornamental plants, specifically targeting aphids, whiteflies, spider mites, and thrips. Furthermore, it exhibits auxiliary fungicidal properties, helping to mitigate the germination of certain fungal spores on plant leaf surfaces.

Application techniques require thorough coverage of the plant canopy to ensure adequate contact. Due to the volatile nature of the active components, treatments are most effective when applied during early morning or late evening hours, avoiding the peak heat of the day to maintain the protective film on the foliage for a longer duration.

Safety precautions must be observed during handling, as the concentrated oil can cause irritation to the skin and respiratory system. Operators should wear standard personal protective equipment, including gloves and eye protection. It is also advised to test for phytotoxicity on a small scale before wide-field application, particularly on sensitive young crops.
