Lemongrass oil
Description
Lemongrass oil is a natural essential oil extracted via steam distillation from the leaves of Cymbopogon species. Within agricultural practice, it is recognized as a potent botanical pesticide. The oil is rich in volatile compounds, primarily citral, which provide its characteristic bio-activity against a wide range of agricultural pests and plant pathogens.
The chemical class of lemongrass oil is primarily composed of monoterpenes. Its agricultural application serves as a natural fungicide, insecticide, and miticide. By targeting essential physiological processes of harmful organisms without creating long-term environmental toxic residues, it is widely utilized in organic and integrated pest management (IPM) programs to maintain crop health.
The mechanism of action is largely contact-based. Upon application, the oil causes membrane disruption in fungal spores, effectively halting germination and vegetative growth. Against insects, the oil exerts a repellent effect while also acting as an insecticide by dissolving the waxy protective layers of their exoskeletons, leading to rapid desiccation and death of the pests.
Lemongrass oil is used on a variety of crops, including vegetables, ornamental plants, and greenhouse berries. Key application features include the use of wetting agents to ensure consistent coverage. Due to the high volatility of the oil, treatments are best timed for early morning or late evening hours. This ensures that the active ingredients stay on the plant surface long enough to act effectively before evaporation.

Furthermore, because of its chemical nature, it is advisable to test for phytotoxicity on a small area of the crop before applying a full field treatment, especially during high-temperature conditions.
