Maize oil (Zea mays oil) is widely recognized in agronomy as a bio-based adjuvant used to enhance the performance of crop protection agents. Unlike active chemical pesticides, maize oil serves as a formulation additive designed to modify the physical characteristics of spray solutions, ensuring that the active ingredients work to their full potential.

The mechanism of action involves reducing the surface tension of the spray droplets. This allows for a more uniform coverage of the plant surface, particularly on waxy or pubescent leaves, which are typically difficult to wet. By facilitating the formation of a stable film, the oil increases the retention time and promotes the penetration of systemic pesticides through the plant cuticle.

This adjuvant is utilized across a diverse range of crops, including corn, soybeans, and cereals. It is predominantly used in tank mixes with post-emergence herbicides, fungicides, and insecticides. Its primary purpose is to control resistant weed species and protect crops from fungal pathogens by ensuring the active substance reaches the target tissues effectively.

When applying maize oil, it is essential to ensure that the emulsion in the spray tank remains stable. Agronomists must adhere to specific label recommendations regarding mixing sequences. Over-application or inappropriate timing—especially during heat stress—may increase the risk of phytotoxicity due to the enhanced penetration of the herbicide into the crop itself.
