Peanut oil (Arachis hypogaea oil) is utilized in the agricultural sector as a botanical oil agent, functioning either as an active ingredient in contact pesticides or as an effective adjuvant for conventional crop protection products. It is derived from the seeds of the peanut plant and is recognized for its ability to enhance the efficacy of chemical treatments through physical modification of the droplet interface.

The mechanism of action for peanut oil is primarily physical rather than systemic. When applied as a foliar spray, the oil coats the target pests—such as mites, aphids, and scale insects—effectively sealing their spiracles and causing death through suffocation. Additionally, its role as an adjuvant improves the adhesion, spreading, and penetration of co-applied pesticides, ensuring they remain active on the foliage for longer durations.

This substance is commonly applied to a variety of horticultural and specialty crops. Key targets for control include:

• Spider mites and other tetranychid species.
• Aphids and whiteflies.
• Scale insects on fruit trees.
• Powdery mildew (by disrupting spore attachment).

Application guidelines emphasize the importance of timing and environmental conditions. Treatments should ideally be performed during cooler times of the day to prevent plant stress. Excessive temperatures can interact with oil residues, potentially leading to phytotoxicity. Regular agitation of the sprayer tank is necessary to maintain a stable emulsion, as oil and water naturally tend to separate over time.

Regarding safety and precautions, peanut oil is considered an environmentally benign alternative to synthetic oils. It is biodegradable and generally leaves no harmful residues on crops. Nevertheless, operators should wear protective gear to avoid skin and eye irritation. Proper storage in cool, dark locations is essential to prevent oxidation, which can alter the oil's chemical profile and reduce its effectiveness as a crop protection agent.
