Polyvinyl acetate (PVA) is a widely used polymer in the agricultural industry, functioning primarily as an adjuvant or a spreader-sticker rather than a traditional pesticide. It is a synthetic resin that alters the physical properties of spray solutions to enhance the performance of active chemical ingredients applied to crops.

The mechanism of action for this substance relies on its film-forming capabilities. Once the carrier liquid evaporates, polyvinyl acetate leaves a flexible, semi-permeable film over the plant tissue. This film significantly improves the rainfastness of fungicides, insecticides, and herbicides, ensuring that the active ingredients remain in contact with the plant surfaces for a longer duration.

Its primary agricultural application includes its use in tank mixes to improve the efficacy of crop protection products on crops like pome fruits, vegetables, and ornamentals. Additionally, it is used as a protective coating for fruit to prevent cracking caused by fluctuations in water content, and it is sometimes applied to graft unions to stabilize the tissues while they heal.

Application guidelines emphasize the importance of spray timing. The product requires a period of dry conditions following application to allow the polymer film to set properly. If applied too close to a rainfall event, the efficacy of the spreader-sticker can be significantly reduced, as the film will not have achieved sufficient polymerization on the leaf surface.

Regarding safety, polyvinyl acetate is considered environmentally safe and non-toxic to most mammals; however, standard precautions should be followed during handling, such as using protective gear to avoid skin or eye irritation. Because it can increase the viscosity of the solution, applicators should regularly inspect spray nozzles during operation to ensure consistent output and prevent equipment clogging.
