Potassium oleate
Description
Potassium oleate is a potassium salt of oleic acid, commonly categorized as a surfactant with strong insecticidal and acaricidal properties. Frequently referred to as "soft soap" or "potassium soap," it is a staple in integrated pest management and organic farming programs due to its favorable environmental profile and rapid biodegradation in the soil environment.
The mode of action of potassium oleate is primarily physical rather than toxicological. Upon contact, the substance dissolves the waxy cuticle that protects the insect's exoskeleton. This action leads to the rapid dehydration of the pest, disruption of its respiratory system, and subsequent death. Because the effect is contact-based, the physical contact between the spray droplet and the pest is essential for control.
It is specifically indicated for the control of soft-bodied insects and mites, including aphids, whiteflies, thrips, spider mites, and scale insect crawlers. Potassium oleate is versatile, finding use on a variety of crops such as greenhouse vegetables, ornamental flowers, and orchard fruit trees. Beyond its role as an active ingredient, it serves as a highly effective adjuvant to improve the wetting and spreading of other agrochemicals.
Application instructions emphasize the importance of thorough coverage. Since the product lacks systemic properties, it does not move within the plant tissue, meaning areas left un-sprayed remain vulnerable to infestation. To prevent phytotoxicity or leaf burn, especially under high light intensity or high temperature, it is advised to conduct applications during cooler periods, such as early morning or late evening.
- Low toxicity profile for non-target organisms and humans.
- No residual buildup in fruit or vegetable tissues.
- Excellent performance as a surfactant in pesticide tank mixes.
- Effective for cleaning honeydew and sooty mold from leaves.
Safety measures during handling include the use of standard protective gear, such as gloves and goggles, to avoid accidental contact with eyes or sensitive skin. Potassium oleate should be stored in a cool, dry place and should not be allowed to freeze, as this may alter the physical stability of the formulation. Always verify local regulations before applying to specific commercial crops.
