Description
Potassium silicate is a versatile inorganic compound widely recognized in modern agriculture as a contact fungicide and a potent silicon supplement. It serves as an essential tool for bolstering the structural integrity of plant tissues and providing a physical barrier against various environmental and biotic stressors.
The mechanism of action is multifaceted. Once applied, it leaves a residual alkaline film on the foliage, which creates an inhospitable environment for fungal spores to germinate. Simultaneously, the silicon is absorbed by the plant, where it is deposited into the cell walls, reinforcing the cuticle and making the plant significantly more resilient to pathogen invasion.
It is primarily utilized on a variety of horticultural crops, including greenhouse vegetables and ornamental plants, specifically to combat powdery mildew. Furthermore, it acts as a deterrent for soft-bodied insects like aphids and mites. By hardening the plant surface, it creates a physical obstacle that prevents pests from effectively feeding on plant sap.
Application requires careful consideration of compatibility. Due to its high pH, potassium silicate is incompatible with many common pesticides and foliar fertilizers, as it can cause them to precipitate or lose efficacy. It is strongly recommended to apply this substance separately from other treatments to ensure optimal coverage and performance.
Regarding safety measures, personal protective equipment such as gloves and goggles should be worn during handling. While potassium silicate has low toxicity, it is alkaline and can cause irritation to skin and eyes upon contact. Proper storage is essential; the product must be kept in sealed containers and stored away from acidic substances to prevent chemical degradation.
