Propanil

Description

Propanil is a highly effective selective contact herbicide belonging to the anilide chemical class. It is widely recognized as a standard solution for controlling a broad spectrum of annual broadleaf weeds and certain grasses in rice paddies. Its application is crucial for minimizing weed competition during the early and critical stages of rice development.

The mechanism of action for propanil is the inhibition of photosynthesis in target weeds. The substance blocks electron transport in photosystem II, which leads to growth cessation, chlorosis, and subsequent plant death. As propanil acts primarily through contact, it does not translocate significantly within the plant, making thorough and uniform leaf coverage essential for maximum efficacy.

The primary use for propanil is in rice farming. It is highly effective against major rice weeds such as barnyard grass, sedges, and various broadleaf species. The optimal timing for application is when weeds are at the 2 to 4 leaf stage, as they are most vulnerable at this point. Efficacy may decrease significantly if application is delayed until the weeds are mature.

Application requirements emphasize favorable weather conditions. It is recommended to apply propanil when temperatures are between +20°C and +30°C. Under these conditions, the metabolic processes of the rice plant can rapidly detoxify the herbicide, whereas the target weeds are unable to do so and perish. Applying the herbicide during cold spells should be avoided to prevent potential crop injury.

Safety precautions must be strictly followed when handling propanil. As it is categorized as a moderately hazardous substance, the use of appropriate personal protective equipment for skin and respiratory protection is mandatory. Additionally, farmers must prevent spray drift to adjacent fields containing crops that may be sensitive to this herbicide to avoid accidental damage.

  • High selectivity for rice crops.
  • Rapid herbicidal effect.
  • No residual soil activity.
  • Strict requirement for timing relative to weed growth stage.
