The primary purpose of propionic acid in farming is the treatment of stored grain and high-moisture forage crops. By inhibiting the development of molds, yeasts, and specific bacteria, it ensures that feed remains hygienic and retains its nutritional value, which is vital for the livestock industry and long-term storage.

The mechanism of action involves the acidification of the pathogen's cellular environment. When the acid permeates the cell membrane of a fungus or bacterium, it dissociates inside the cell, lowering the internal pH.
