Description

Prothoate is a chemical compound belonging to the organophosphate class of insecticides and acaricides. This substance has been historically utilized in agriculture to control a wide spectrum of insect pests and mites that affect both field crops and various fruit-bearing plants.

The mode of action of prothoate is based on the inhibition of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase within the insect's nervous system. By disrupting the transmission of nerve impulses, the chemical causes paralysis, leading to the rapid death of the pest. It exhibits both contact and systemic activity, allowing it to penetrate plant tissues and provide internal protection.

The product is effectively used against a variety of sucking and chewing pests, including aphids, thrips, various mite species, and codling moths. It is most commonly applied on industrial crops, such as cotton, as well as in specific orchard settings to suppress pest populations during active growth stages.

When using prothoate, it is critical to follow established application rates to prevent the development of insect resistance. Applications should be performed during early morning or late evening hours to avoid wind drift, while strictly observing pre-harvest intervals to ensure safety for human consumption.

Due to the high toxicity of prothoate to mammals and bees, rigorous safety precautions must be followed. Operators are required to wear appropriate personal protective equipment for the skin and respiratory system, and must respect buffer zones near water bodies and apiaries to prevent adverse environmental impacts.
