Pyraflufen-ethyl

Pyraflufen-ethyl is a potent active ingredient classified as a phenylpyrazole. It functions primarily as a contact-type, post-emergence herbicide. It is widely recognized in professional agriculture for its ability to provide rapid desiccation and effective control of broadleaf weeds in various farming operations.

The mode of action of this compound is characterized by the inhibition of the protoporphyrinogen oxidase (PPO) enzyme. By interrupting the chlorophyll biosynthesis pathway, it leads to the accumulation of porphyrins. This results in the rapid destruction of cellular membranes once the plant tissue is exposed to sunlight, causing visible scorching and death of the weeds within hours.

It is commonly utilized in a variety of crops, including cereals, potatoes, corn, and vineyards. Pyraflufen-ethyl is particularly effective against stubborn broadleaf weeds such as cleavers, common lambsquarters, pigweed, and various mustard species. Beyond weed control, it is frequently employed as a harvest aid (desiccant) to reduce biomass before combining.

Due to its strictly contact nature, thorough and uniform spray coverage is critical for success. Since the active ingredient does not translocate systemically within the plant, droplets must hit the target foliage directly. It performs best under warm, sunny conditions, which accelerate the chemical reaction that causes tissue necrosis in the target weeds.
