Quartz sand

Description

Quartz sand is utilized in plant protection as a non-chemical, physical agent designed to manage insect pests. Unlike systemic or contact chemical pesticides, quartz sand does not possess any toxicological mode of action against the plant metabolism. Its primary function is to serve as a mechanical barrier and a physical abrasive agent against soft-bodied and crawling insects.

The mechanism of action is based on the interaction between the abrasive silica particles and the insect's cuticle. When insects come into contact with the sharp edges of the quartz particles, the protective waxy layer of their exoskeleton is disrupted. This damage leads to desiccation and rapid dehydration, which ultimately results in the death of the pest without the risk of developing resistance.

This substance is primarily applied in vegetable production, particularly for protecting carrots, onions, and leeks. It is used to deter pests such as the carrot rust fly and the onion fly. By creating a physical layer around the base of the plant, the sand prevents the flies from reaching the soil to lay their eggs, thereby reducing larval damage to the roots and bulbs.

Application techniques require consistency to maintain the effectiveness of the barrier. The sand must be applied around the base of the stems soon after emergence. Growers should consider that the layer needs to be maintained, especially after heavy rainfall or irrigation, which may cause the sand to be displaced or embedded into the soil, thereby losing its protective capacity.

Safety precautions are primarily related to respiratory health. Because fine quartz dust can cause irritation to the respiratory system, it is recommended to wear a dust mask during application. Furthermore, it is essential to use high-quality, clean quartz sand to prevent the introduction of weeds, soil pathogens, or harmful chemical contaminants into the crop field.
