Quizalofop-P-ethyl

Description

Quizalofop-P-ethyl is a potent active ingredient classified as an aryloxyphenoxypropionate. It functions as a systemic post-emergence herbicide, primarily used as a selective graminicide. It is widely recognized in modern agriculture for its high efficacy in controlling both annual and perennial grass weeds in various broad-leaved crops.

The herbicidal mechanism involves the inhibition of the acetyl-CoA carboxylase enzyme within the plant's meristematic tissues. By blocking this enzyme, the herbicide effectively prevents the synthesis of fatty acids required for membrane integrity. This disruption leads to the cessation of plant growth within hours, eventually resulting in the chlorosis and death of the target weeds.

This substance is commonly applied to crops such as soybeans, sunflowers, sugar beets, oilseed rape, and potatoes. It targets a broad spectrum of invasive grass species, including quackgrass (Elymus repens), johnsongrass (Sorghum halepense), green foxtail (Setaria viridis), and wild oats. It is essential for protecting crop yields from competition for nutrients and sunlight.

Application guidelines emphasize the importance of timing and environmental conditions. The herbicide performs optimally when applied to actively growing grass weeds during their early growth stages (2–4 leaf stage). It is generally recommended to avoid application if the crop is under environmental stress, such as drought, extreme cold, or pest infestation, to ensure high selectivity and crop safety.

Safety precautions for handling Quizalofop-P-ethyl include the use of personal protective equipment, such as gloves, protective coveralls, and respiratory protection. The chemical is considered to have moderate toxicity; however, environmental protection is paramount. Users must prevent runoff into water bodies to avoid harming aquatic ecosystems and ensure that neighboring crops sensitive to the herbicide are not exposed during spraying.
