Tall oil is a complex mixture derived from pine trees during the kraft pulping process. In the context of plant protection, crude tall oil serves as an active ingredient in specialized animal repellents, designed to safeguard vegetation from browsing and stripping by various herbivorous mammals.

Classified as a repellent, this substance does not function as a herbicide or pesticide. Its primary purpose is to act as a chemical deterrent. By creating an olfactory barrier, it effectively prevents deer, moose, and other ungulates from feeding on succulent plant tissue, which is essential for the survival of saplings.

The mode of action relies on the volatile organic compounds present in the tall oil, which emit a strong, unpleasant scent that animals find repulsive. When applied correctly, this scent serves as a warning signal, causing the animals to avoid the area altogether rather than attempting to graze on the treated plants.

Application is most common in forestry management and young orchard maintenance. It is often applied to the bark or terminal buds of trees to prevent winter damage, where food sources are scarce.
