Willow bark

Willow bark (Salix spp. cortex) is a natural agricultural input derived from various Salix species, primarily valued for its content of salicylates. In modern agronomy, it serves as a foundational component in organic crop protection strategies aimed at enhancing natural plant defense mechanisms.

The substance functions as a biological elicitor. Rather than directly killing pests or pathogens like a synthetic pesticide, it acts as a signaling molecule. It triggers the plant's Systemic Acquired Resistance (SAR), which essentially primes the plant's immune system to recognize and respond to potential stressors much faster than in untreated plants.

The mechanism of action involves the stimulation of biochemical pathways responsible for producing phytoalexins and pathogenesis-related (PR) proteins. This physiological boost strengthens the plant's cuticle and cell walls, making them highly resistant to fungal pathogens such as powdery mildew, leaf spot, and root decay, as well as several bacterial infections.

Willow bark extracts are applied across a wide range of crops, including horticultural staples, fruit trees, and field crops.
