Description
Sulphur is a naturally occurring inorganic element utilized globally as a contact fungicide and acaricide. As a classic active ingredient, it remains a cornerstone in conventional and organic farming practices due to its proven efficacy against a variety of fungal pathogens and mite species without inducing resistance in target organisms.
The mode of action of sulphur is primarily based on its sublimation process. When applied to foliage, the substance vaporizes in warm weather, and these vapours penetrate the cell membranes of spores and parasites. Once inside, sulphur interferes with the metabolic processes, specifically hindering mitochondrial respiration, which leads to the rapid death of the fungus or pest.
Sulphur is widely used to manage powdery mildew on essential crops including grapevines, orchard fruits like apples and pears, as well as various vegetables like cucumbers and tomatoes. Beyond its antifungal capacity, it acts as a robust suppression tool for spider mites, assisting farmers in managing multi-pest scenarios with a single application.
Successful application is strictly tied to temperature, with the optimal performance range being between 20°C and 30°C. In cooler conditions, the vapor pressure is too low to provide sufficient control, while temperatures exceeding 30°C significantly increase the risk of phytotoxicity, manifesting as leaf burn, especially in sensitive cultivars.

Safety precautions are vital when handling sulphur, as it can be irritating to the respiratory tract and eyes. Workers should wear appropriate personal protective equipment during mixing and spraying. Furthermore, users must be cautious about tank mixes: sulphur should never be combined with mineral oils or oil-based formulations, as the synergy between these chemicals can be extremely phytotoxic to crops.
