Sunflower oil

In agronomy, sunflower oil is classified not as a standalone pesticide but as an adjuvant, often serving as an active ingredient in biological contact insecticides and fungicides. It consists of a mixture of triglycerides of fatty acids derived from the seeds of Helianthus annuus and is widely utilized to improve the physical and chemical properties of spray mixtures.

The mechanism of action of sunflower oil relies on its ability to create a thin lipophilic film on the surface of leaves or the cuticle of pests. As an insecticide, it functions by blocking the spiracles of insects and mites, causing death by asphyxiation. In fungicides, the oil acts as a physical barrier, preventing pathogen spores from penetrating plant tissues by establishing a hydrophobic coating.

This component is extensively used on a variety of crops, including vegetables, fruits, and field crops. It is primarily effective against aphids, whiteflies, and mites, as well as being a useful component in the management of powdery mildew. The oil is frequently added to tank mixes to improve spreading and reduce the evaporation rate of the applied pesticide solution.

Application guidelines for sunflower oil require precise adherence to dosage rates, as excessive amounts can clog plant stomata, thereby disrupting photosynthesis. Applications should be performed during early morning or late evening hours under moderate temperatures to minimize the risk of leaf burn caused by the synergistic effect of the oil and direct solar radiation.

Safety measures include pre-testing the compatibility of the oil with other tank-mix components to prevent precipitation. While sunflower oil is considered environmentally friendly and non-toxic to warm-blooded animals, personal protective equipment is required when handling concentrated industrial emulsions, and ecological protocols regarding the protection of pollinators and beneficial entomofauna must be strictly observed.
