Description

Thiometon is an organophosphate insecticide and acaricide known for its potent systemic action within the plant tissue. Chemically, it functions as a phosphorothiolate, which, upon application to the foliage, is absorbed by the plant and translocated through the xylem and phloem, providing systemic protection to newly developing leaves and shoots.

The primary mode of action is the inhibition of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase (AChE) in the nervous system of insects. By blocking the breakdown of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, thiometon causes hyperstimulation of the nervous system, leading to paralysis, respiratory failure, and death of the pest. This makes it highly effective against insects that feed on plant sap.

Thiometon is widely recognized for its efficacy against a broad range of sap-sucking pests, primarily aphids, mites, thrips, and whiteflies. It is traditionally used on various crops including cereals, sugar beets, oilseed rape, and orchard fruits. Its ability to reach pests hidden in curled leaves makes it a valuable tool in integrated pest management programs.
