Description
Thiophanate-methyl is a widely used systemic fungicide belonging to the benzimidazole chemical class. It acts as a pro-fungicide, meaning it is converted into carbendazim within the plant tissues, which serves as the active moiety responsible for inhibiting fungal growth and development during the vegetation period.
The primary mode of action involves the interference with the mitotic process in fungal cells. By binding to beta-tubulin, the substance prevents the formation of microtubules, which are essential for cellular division. This mechanism ensures strong inhibition of mycelial growth and sporulation, providing both protective and curative benefits to the treated crops.
Farmers utilize thiophanate-methyl on a diverse array of crops including cereals, sugar beets, pome fruits, and grapes. It is highly effective against various diseases such as powdery mildew, leaf spot complexes, scab, and gray mold. Its ability to be translocated systemically within the plant allows for protection of newly emerging leaves after the application.
